Joshua Aubrook is a British ceramicist based in South West London and specialises in clay casting, sculpting and glaze development. Aubrook is inspired by the art and theology of the ‘Christian Wonderous’ style of medieval Europe. Centring idealism over realistic depiction in his form, Aubrook creates ceramic artworks which explore how the themes of faith, truth and paradise are addressed creatively from the 12th century to the modern day.
Aubrook holds a BA (Hons) Degree in Ceramics from the University for the Creative Arts, 2018 and a Masters Degree in Ceramics from the Royal College of Art, 2023. Aubrook was shortlisted for the Wales Contemporary Awards in 2022, and has most recently exhibited through Bonhams in the Art of Craft auction, 2023.
The pursuit of religious faith through art is a centuries old endeavour. For each generation, advancement, and artist, the answer may change but the question stays the same. The journey towards faith, and by association truth and meaning, can takes us through boundless landscapes of inspiration, imagination, and belief. And what is it that I have found along my way?
Paradise cannot be found. It must be made.
Higher truths can only be accessed through image and object after the acceptance of divergent outcomes occupying a physical singularity.
