Width: 24 cm

Length: 24 cm

Height (from wall): 10cm

The As It Rains collection is inspired by the artwork of the Italian Renaissance miniaturist Cristoforo De Predis. De Predis’ paintings of Biblical scenes are idealistic, allowing both emotion and tone to eclipse depictive accuracy. The painting ‘Death of the Sun, Moon and Stars Falling’ (circa 1460) inspired me to create ceramic vessels and wall sculptures that belong within this broken landscape. The decorative shapes, each informed by ecclesiastic symbology and individually hand sculpted, capture the energy and grace of a falling sky.

As It Rains is finished with a copper green glaze developed from the 17th century chemical recipe of a roof tile glaze used by Watts Gallery founder, Mary Watts. During my time as the ceramicist of the Watts Gallery, Guildford, I was able to access their academic archive where I discovered this treasure. Working remotely with Guildford’s communities during the pandemic of 2020, I was able to translate this old glaze recipe into a working modern equivalent using vernacular British materials. As It Rains, first edition is made from a white earthenware clay to best showcase this green glaze.

The backing of the piece has 10 recessed holes for easy wall mounting
